About Kalkan

Kalkan is an beautiful town and certainly one of the most picturesque places on the Lycian Coast. It still retains an authentic feel which many destinations have lost, the postcard worthy views are not just of the surrounding scenery but also the traditional white-washed houses which seem to meet the sea.

Everywhere you look you'll see something to marvel at, be it the pine forest covered mountains, the sparkling waters or the ancient historical ruins. Tranquility, peace and relaxation is the order of the day here, so lay back on one of the cleanest shores around and soak up some of the plentiful Turkish sun.

Kalkan is blessed with hot dry summers and warm wet winters. Only occassionally does the sea temperature fall below 16°C. Take care during the summer months as the temperature can regularly be in the range of 35-40°C and 14-16°C during the winter months. Humidity is typically low, preferred by locals and tourists for its health-giving benefits.

There is now over 100 restaurants in "Old Kalkan". Travel agencies, restaurants, bars, one or two nightclubs, hotels, apartments and private villas are all present.

Activities in and around Kalkan

Take a boat departing from Kalkan’s small yacht harbour and explore the lovely Kaputas Beach the for a swim in the magnificent colors of the 'Blue Cave', the largest sea cave in the whole of Turkey. If you’re lucky you’ll spot the nearby dolphins or have freshly harpooned fish for dinner.

Patara National Park and Beach

Patara’s stunning 12 km-long beach was voted one of the top beaches in the world by Times Online. The park includes the ancient site of Patara, the major naval and trading port of ancient Lycia.  An extensive city with many ancient structures, including what may be the world's oldest lighthouse, it is a key biodiversity area, with rich birdlife and the protected breeding ground of the endangered loggerhead turtle.

Pinara: One of the most spectacular sites in Lycia. A large red cliff dominates the site and hundreds of caves dug into its East façade make it look like a honeycomb.

Xanthos/Letoon: UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sacred cult centre of Lycia.  Three side-by-side temples to national deities Leto, Artemis and Apollo

Tlos: best-known for the Ottoman feudal lord’s castle which sits on the top of the promontory with a spectacular 360° view of the Xanthus Valley. Also Roman era baths and necropolis with its carved house and temple type tombs.

Kekova-Simena: An area with beautiful scenery and underwater ruins accessible by boat.

Hiking: The Lycian Way is a 509 km way-marked footpath around the coast of Lycia, rated by the Sunday Times as one of the ten most beautiful long distance hikes of the world. Mild temperatures mean it can be walked through the winter.

Horse Riding at Bezirgan: The authentic Turkish village of Bezirgan comfortably nesting on an ancient mountain lake bed 17 km. away from Kalkan is a MUST.

Saklikent canyon: Half an hour from Kalkan is a canyon accessed by a spectacular narrow foot path suspended from the a rock wall. Rafting also available.

Shopping: Kalkan has 2 main markets open everyday + a traditional bazaar is available every Thursday. Markets also available at Fethiye.

Scuba Diving / Snorkeling: arranged by professional divers departing from the Kalkan harbor.

By Car: Lycia is connected to the rest of the Turkey by the coastal road which follows along the Mediterranean between Fethiye and Antalya. Bring some Turkish money for toll-roads. The Villa is situated below main road to/from Kas and is the first building after you leave Kalkan.

By Air: The international airports of Dalaman and Antalya are within easy reach of any place in Lycia. There are international flights throughout the week from many cities throughout Europe & the UK.•Dalaman: Dalaman Airport (DLM) with its new international terminal is only 90 minutes from Kalkan.•Antalya: Antalya airport (AYT) is 3 hours drive from Kalkan.

By Sea: The regular ferryboat service from Italian ports permits travelers to sail to Kuþadasý or Ýzmir an then to continue by road to Lycia enjoying en route some spectacular scenery. During summer months, Turkish Maritime Lines have regular boat services along the Mediterranean coast.
